Back in the army Sting Pictures takes a look at the life of the Army juniors. Now long since ended, most regiments traditionally had young lads, fresh out of school, training in various battalions linked to the senior branch of the regiment. When they completed their initial training as juniors they would graduate by age to the upper echelons of the regiment.

Our story portrayed via the memories of a Colour Sergeant now retired from a famous junior cavalry battalion attached to the 12th Field Cavalry Regiment. Discipline was strictly maintained more over because the young troopers were just that, not much older than regular college students. Caning in the army and birching is of course legendary. Receiving cuts to maintain discipline in both the army and navy was commonplace.

Often given off the record to protect a lad’s career when starting out it was a quick and successful answer to disciplining young soldiers. The Cavalry of course had its own traditions and methods. Going back to the turn of the century birching and caning could be accompanied by feaging, a method of keeping cavalry horse’s tails raised for parades by inserting a small piece of ginger root. In the latter half of the century of course this has been done away with but the use of the riding crop over a cold leather saddle in the tack room was not unknown.

Military service for young troopers in the 12th Cavalry Regiment could mean all sorts of disciplinary measures being taken. Braced over a saddle or spread across a gym horse the cane, birch and riding crop would sing their painful songs, not to mention a good spanking from the regimental PTI or Colour Sergeant.

From here on in Troopers Wilson, Stevens, Mason, Johnson, Fox and Robinson will play out those blazing days of military discipline in another Sting classic Troopers in Trouble!
